DiscoverCast off for your freedom: Rent a houseboat and rediscover Europe
Imagine the alarm clock being replaced by the gentle splashing of water against the boat's side. You open your eyes, and instead of a gray house facade, you look directly into nature. A heron circles, the morning mist clears over the lake. That is not an unreachable dream, but the start into your day during a houseboat holiday.
A holiday on the water is perhaps the most consistent form of deceleration. Away from asphalt, towards the river course. Anyone looking to rent a houseboat today consciously decides against hustle and bustle, traffic jams and overcrowded hotel pools. At Campcruisers we make this step as easy as possible. Whether you are captaining your family through Mecklenburg or exploring the canals of Holland with friends – your cruise starts here.
Your floating holiday home – comfort meets adventure
Many interested parties still have narrow berths and spartan conditions in mind when they hear the word "boat". But modern houseboats have hardly anything to do with that anymore. When we talk about a floating holiday home, we mean exactly that: full living comfort.
Most of our boats offer you amenities that you know from a holiday apartment on land, only with the best view in the world:
- Fully equipped galley (kitchen): From fridge to gas stove, everything is there to prepare freshly caught fish or marketplace vegetables.
- Sanitary areas: Own showers and WCs are standard. Nobody has to walk across a campsite at night.
- Salon with a view: Large panorama windows ensure that you can enjoy the landscape even during a rain shower.
- The sun deck: Your private balcony, which is always exactly where it is most beautiful.
Spending a boating holiday means always having your home with you. You don't have to pack suitcases when you change location. You start the engine and your living room simply travels with you.
Rent a houseboat without a license – is that really possible?
This is probably the most common question that reaches us: "May I even steer such a big boat?" The answer is in the vast majority of cases: Yes, you may!
A holiday on a houseboat is also possible for beginners without an official sport boat license. In many of Europe's most beautiful areas, legislators and tourism associations have created an unbureaucratic solution:
The charter certificate (Germany)
In Germany, specifically on the Mecklenburg Lake District and in parts of Brandenburg, there is the so-called charter certificate. If you want to rent a houseboat, you will receive a detailed theoretical and practical briefing on site (approx. 3 hours) from the staff of the charter base. Afterwards you will receive an officially recognized certificate valid for the duration of your holiday.
Regulations in France and the Netherlands
In our neighboring countries, it is often even more relaxed. In France and large parts of the Netherlands, houseboats are generally license-free due to their design and speed limit. Of course, you will still receive a thorough briefing on technology, docking and traffic rules. Safety comes first so that you can relax and enjoy your houseboat holiday.
Pure deceleration: Why houseboat driving makes you happy
In a world where everything has to go "immediately" and "fast", the houseboat is the ideal counter-design. Travel speed is rarely above 10 km/h. This gently forces you to adjust your inner rhythm. You don't rush past the landscape, you become part of it.
In houseboat driving, not appointments determine the day, but the light, the weather and your whim.
- Anchoring in the wild: Find a lonely bay, throw the anchor and jump directly from the deck into the clear water.
- Culture on the shore: Moort in historic cities, stroll through alleys and return to your own boat in the evening.
- Wildlife observation: From the water, you see kingfishers, beavers and ospreys from a perspective that hikers often miss.
The most beautiful areas for your boating holiday
Europe is traversed by a fascinating network of rivers, canals and lakes. But where should the journey go? Here are some favorites of our customers when they rent a houseboat:
Mecklenburg Lake District & Brandenburg
The "land of a thousand lakes" is unique in Europe. A huge, networked water sports area without strong currents, ideal for beginners and nature lovers. Müritz, Havel and the small canals in between offer endless possibilities.
Canal du Midi & Alsace (France)
France is the classic country for boating holidays. The Canal du Midi in the south (UNESCO World Heritage Site) beckons with sun, vineyards and historic plane tree avenues. In Alsace you enjoy culinary highlights and even drive across the mountains via ship lift.
Friesland & Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Holland is the water country par excellence. Renting a houseboat is almost part of good tone here. Drive through lively canals, pass historic windmills and experience the open, friendly nature of the Dutch in the small harbor towns.
Who is a holiday on a houseboat suitable for?
The flexibility of this form of travel makes it attractive for almost every constellation:
- Families: Children love the adventure on board. Many boats are secured with a railing, and life takes place a lot outside. A new swimming lake every day – it hardly gets any better.
- Couples: Romantic sunsets on deck, dinner by candlelight in a lonely bay. A houseboat holiday offers a lot of privacy.
- Groups & Friends: Cooking together, playing cards on deck and deciding the route democratically. Larger boats offer up to 10 or 12 sleeping places (berths), so the costs per person are often surprisingly low.
- Dog owners: Dogs are very welcome on many of our boats. The dog is close to its "pack" and walks are possible at every shore leave.
Renting a houseboat at Campcruisers – transparent and safe
We know that booking a houseboat is a matter of trust. Often it is about the annual holiday that one has saved for a long time. That's why we at Campcruisers rely on absolute transparency.
If you want to book a houseboat through us, we guarantee you:
- Verified partners: We don't list every boat, but work with established charter companies that maintain and care for their fleets professionally.
- No hidden costs: Operating cost flat rates, final cleaning or deposit regulations – we break down for you before booking what the holiday on the water costs.
- Personal support: Our team consists of people who like to go boating themselves. We help you choose the right type of boat and the matching area.
Your checklist before casting off
To make your cruise a success, here are some practical tips:
- Choose travel time: High season (July/August) is busy and warm. If you are looking for peace and want to save, you should rent a houseboat in May or September/October (Indian Summer on the water!).
- Calculate extra costs: Keep in mind that fuel (diesel) is often billed by operating hours. Port fees also apply when you stay overnight in marinas (when anchoring in nature ("wild lying") it is often free or very cheap).
- Plan provisions: Space on board is limited, but available. A bulk purchase before the start saves time and money, but shopping at local markets along the way is part of the experience.
Conclusion: Become the captain of your own time
There are many ways to travel, but few are as sustainably relaxing as a holiday on a houseboat. It is the combination of technical fascination, nature experience and cozy get-togethers that makes this type of travel so special.
Stop running after everyday life. Swap the highway for the waterway. Pick out your desired territory now, compare the boats and get ready for an adventure that you will still tell your grandchildren about.
Find your perfect houseboat now and book your freedom!
